Risk Update: New DEA CME Requirements for Renewal

DEA Requires 8-hour CME to Renew or Obtain Certificate

On June 27, 2023, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 mandates that all Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) – registered physicians and healthcare providers complete a one-time, 8-hour CME training on managing and treating opioid and other substance abuse disorders. The deadline for satisfying this new training requirement is the date of a practitioner’s next scheduled DEA registration submission – regardless of whether it is an initial registration or a renewal registration – on or after June 27, 2023. This one-time training requirement affirmation will not be a part of future registration renewals.

Physicians and healthcare providers that are board certified in addiction medicine or addiction psychiatry from the American Board of Medical Specialties, the American Board of Addiction Medicine, or the American Osteopathic Association (Group 1) and those who have graduated in good standing from a medical (allopathic or osteopathic), dental, physician assistant, or advanced practice nursing school in the United States within 5-years of June 27. 2023 and can attest to such training being part of their curriculum (Group 2) are exempt from the 8-hour requirement . However, all others, whether it be a renewal or new certificate, must complete 8-hours of CME training on managing and treating opioid and other substance abuse disorders to renew or obtain their certificate.

Important Takeaways:

  1. Past courses may meet the requirement. See the DEA MATE Training Letter for a listing of approved CME providers.
  2. The training does not have to occur in one session.
  3. A variety of formats, including classroom settings, seminars at professional society meetings, or virtual offerings, are acceptable.
